What 5E means

The defrost sensor sits on or near the evaporator coil in the fresh-food (fridge) compartment. During defrost cycles, this sensor tells the board when the evaporator has warmed enough for ice to melt. If the sensor fails, the defrost cycle runs too long or not at all — either overheating the coil or allowing it to ice over.

Common symptoms: frost buildup behind the rear panel of the fridge compartment, poor cooling on the fridge side while the freezer works fine, or water pooling at the bottom of the fridge.

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the refrigerator.
  2. Remove the rear panel inside the fridge compartment to access the evaporator.
  3. Check for heavy frost. If the evaporator is a solid block of ice, let it defrost completely before proceeding (this can take 4-8 hours — place towels underneath).
  4. Locate the defrost sensor — usually a small thermal fuse or bi-metal switch clipped to the evaporator tubes.
  5. Test continuity with a multimeter. At room temperature, the defrost sensor should show continuity (closed circuit). If open, replace it.
  6. Replace and reassemble. Clip the new sensor in the same position. Replace the rear panel and plug the fridge back in.
