Why frost is building up

All modern Toshiba refrigerators have an automatic defrost system that periodically heats the evaporator coil to melt any frost that accumulates during normal operation. When this system fails, frost keeps building until the evaporator is completely encased in ice — blocking airflow, reducing cooling, and eventually causing the compressor to overwork and the fridge to warm up.

You may notice ice forming on the freezer rear panel, food freezing unevenly, the freezer humming louder than usual, or water pooling at the bottom of the fridge.

How to fix it

  1. Manual defrost first. Unplug the refrigerator and leave both doors open for 8-12 hours. Place towels on the floor to catch meltwater. This restores cooling immediately but does not fix the underlying defrost fault.
  2. After defrosting, check the defrost heater. The heater is a glass tube or wire element attached to the evaporator. With the fridge unplugged, test the heater with a multimeter for continuity. If open (no continuity), the heater is burned out and needs replacing.
  3. Check the defrost thermostat (bi-metal). This safety switch cuts heater power when the evaporator reaches a set temperature. Test continuity — at room temperature it should be closed. If open, replace it.
  4. Check the defrost timer or control board. Older Toshiba models use a mechanical defrost timer; newer models use an electronic defrost board. The timer should advance through defrost cycles. If stuck, replace it.
  5. Reassemble and plug in. Monitor for 48 hours — no frost should reappear on the rear panel.

Prevention: Ensure the freezer door closes completely and the gasket seals tightly. Warm, humid air entering the freezer is the primary source of frost.
