Why your Toshiba fridge is not cooling

When a Toshiba refrigerator stops cooling but the lights still work, the power supply is fine — the problem is in the cooling system. The most common cause is a frosted evaporator coil blocking airflow, followed by a failed evaporator fan, dirty condenser coils, and compressor or inverter issues.

Systematic troubleshooting

  1. Check temperature settings. Ensure the thermostat dial or digital control is not accidentally set to the warmest position or turned off. On models with a digital panel, look for "Cooling Off" or "Demo Mode" — press and hold the correct button combination (often Power Freeze + Fridge Temp for 3 seconds) to exit demo mode.
  2. Listen for the compressor. Put your ear near the bottom-rear of the fridge. A low hum means the compressor is running. Complete silence or repeated clicking means the compressor is not starting.
  3. Check the evaporator fan. Open the freezer door — you should feel cold air being blown. If not, the evaporator fan has stopped. This can be caused by ice blocking the blades or a dead fan motor.
  4. Check for ice buildup. Remove the freezer rear panel. If the evaporator coil is encased in ice, the defrost system has failed. Manually defrost (unplug for 8-12 hours with doors open, towels below) and then investigate the defrost heater, thermostat, and timer.
  5. Clean the condenser coils. Dusty coils at the bottom or back of the fridge prevent heat dissipation. The compressor overheats and shuts down. Vacuum or brush them clean.
  6. Check door seals. Close the door on a piece of paper — if you can pull it out easily, the gasket is weak and warm air is entering the fridge, causing it to struggle.
  7. If none of the above helps, the compressor or inverter board may have failed. Call a qualified technician.

Food safety: If the fridge temperature exceeds 8 degrees C, move perishable food to a cooler or neighbour's fridge within 2 hours to prevent spoilage.
