What E5 means

The NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) sensor is a thermistor that measures the water temperature inside the dishwasher tub. The control board reads this sensor continuously to decide when to activate and deactivate the heating element. When the sensor fails, the board cannot safely control the water temperature and displays E5.

E5 is different from E3: E3 means the water is not getting hot (heating issue), while E5 means the sensor that measures the temperature has itself failed (sensor issue). The heater may be perfectly fine, but the board has no way to know the water temperature.

How to fix it

  1. Power cycle first. Turn the dishwasher off at the plug for 5 minutes. Temporary electrical glitches can cause a false E5. If it clears, monitor for recurrence.
  2. Run a short cycle. If E5 reappears during the heating phase of the cycle, the sensor is genuinely faulty.
  3. Call IFB service. The NTC sensor is located inside the tub, typically near the heating element. Replacing it requires partial disassembly — this is a technician-level repair.
  4. The technician will test the sensor resistance with a multimeter (typically 10-15 kOhm at room temperature for dishwasher NTC sensors), check the wiring, and replace the sensor if out of spec.

Note: On some IFB Neptune models, E5 can also indicate a motor overload or overheating. If E5 appears with unusual motor noise or a burning smell, stop the machine immediately and call service.
