Quick answer
tE on an LG dishwasher means the NTC temperature sensor (thermistor) has malfunctioned — open circuit, short circuit, or reading out of range.
What tE means
The NTC thermistor continuously monitors the water temperature inside the tub. The control board uses this reading to manage the heating element. When the sensor fails electrically, the board gets impossible readings and displays tE (Thermal Error).
tE is different from HE: tE means the sensor itself has failed (cannot read temperature), while HE means the heating system is not reaching temperature (sensor may be fine).
How to fix it
- Power cycle. Circuit breaker off for 10-15 minutes. Temporary sensor glitches sometimes clear.
- If tE returns: The thermistor needs replacement. This is located inside the tub near the heating element and requires partial disassembly — a technician-level repair.
What does the tE code mean?
tE indicates the NTC temperature sensor (thermistor) has an electrical fault — open, short, or out-of-range reading.
Common causes
- Failed NTC thermistor (open or short circuit)
- Sensor wiring damaged by heat
- Loose sensor connector on the control board
- Control board sensor input fault (rare)

How to fix the tE error
Power cycle
Circuit breaker off 10-15 minutes. Clears temporary faults.
If tE returns
Thermistor needs replacement — call a technician.
Technician tests
Resistance measurement (typically 10-15 kOhm at room temp), wiring check.
Safety first: The thermistor is near the heating element which operates at mains voltage. Only a qualified technician should access it.
Part you may need: NTC temperature sensor (thermistor)
The sensor is inexpensive but accessing it requires removing the tub base panel.
Frequently asked questions
tE vs HE?
tE = sensor itself has failed. HE = heating system not reaching temperature. Different components.
Can I use the dishwasher with tE?
No — without temperature data, the board cannot safely control the heater.
