What Ed means

The defrost system periodically heats the evaporator coil to melt frost buildup. Ed appears when the main PCB detects that the defrost heater circuit is not working — the heater is open (burned out), the thermofuse has blown, or the defrost cycle is not activating.

If left unfixed, the evaporator becomes encased in ice, blocking all airflow. The freezer and fridge will gradually warm up even though the compressor runs continuously.

How to fix it

  1. Manual defrost first. Unplug the fridge, doors open, 8-12 hours with towels below. This restores cooling immediately.
  2. Test the defrost heater. With the fridge unplugged, access the evaporator (behind the freezer rear panel). Test the heater for continuity — it should show some resistance (20-50 ohms typically). If open (OL), the heater is burned out.
  3. Test the thermofuse. The safety fuse is in series with the heater. Test continuity — if open, the fuse has blown (replace it, but also investigate why it blew).
  4. Check the defrost timer or board. If the heater and fuse are good, the defrost cycle may not be activating. A technician can test the timer or electronic defrost control.
